Iowa infant dies in custody of birth father after mom reneged on adoption agreement with gay couple

Despite the junk science proclamations of right-wing churches and antigay "family" associations, children are not better off with a mom and a dad and sometimes they're much worse off: little Gabriel died in the custody of his 17-year-old birth father after his 16-year-old mom went back on an agreement to let two gay women adopt her son.
     Rachel and Heidi McFarland cared for Gabriel from birth until the middle of March, when his birth mother Markeya Atkins, 16, reneged on an adoption agreement, taking the baby back. (Iowa birth mothers have three months plus an additional 31-day probationary period to change their minds about giving up babies for adoption).
     The McFarlands supported Atkins financially throughout her pregnancy, accompanied her to all doctor visits, and Heidi took maternity leave from work.)
     The baby's father, Drew James Weehler-Smith of Des Moines, has been charged with neglect of a dependent person and may face more charges after an autopsy is completed. The child was found unresponsive with white foam around his mouth.
