Marriage equality: SCOTUS showered with friend-of-the-court briefs by Friends of Friends of Dorothy

While some Catholic bishops are hiring buses to cart pious heterosexual supremacists to Washington during the Supreme Court hearing of cases involving Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, gay organizations and their allies are trying a different tactic: showering the court with friend-of-the-court briefs endorsing gay marriage or condemning DOMA.
In the last several days, gay-supportive briefs relating to Prop 8 and Doma have been filed by:
  • the American Sociological Association
  • the plaintiffs
  • the Obama administration
  • half of congress
  • over 100 prominent Republicans
  • dozens of companies opposed to Prop 8
  • hundreds of companies opposed to the exclusionary marriage definition in DOMA
  • leaders of religious and faith groups
  • NFL players
  • 13 states
  • foreign and comparative law experts
  • the Southern Poverty Law Center
  • Bay Area lawyers
  • five family and children's advocacy organizations
  • PFLAG
  • 25 state equality organizations plus Campaign for Southern Equality, Equality Federation and the Utah Pride Center
That's a lot of reading that Justice Scalia will be forced to ignore! AFER has copies of all the briefs here. Friends of Dorothy allusion explained here. San Francisco's city attorney has dozens of Prop 8-specific briefs here.
