Concrete floor collapses during construction of 9-story Hyatt Place in Omaha's Old Market; as many as 25 fall; three evacuated to hospital

Aftermath: collapsed floor, in photo taken four hours after accident.
Update: although 25 workers were working with wet concrete at the time of the accident, KETV reports that only six fell, a distance of 10-18 feet.
Update 2: The World-Herald says they fell 30 feet, that witnesses told fire officials the shoring used in pouring the concrete floor failed, and that police have identified the injured workers as Geraldo Villareal, 33, Ronald McGuire, 51, and Jeff Carrol, 42, all of Lincoln.
Six police cars, two ambulances, two fire trucks and a hazmat truck were dispatched to the construction site of the 159-room Hyatt Place on the northwest corner of 12th and Jackson Streets this morning about 5 a.m. after a concrete floor collapsed. AKSARBENT overheard a TV reporter repeat an earlier report that as many as 25 people fell through the rebar, but in fact six fell, of whom three were taken to Creighton University Medical Center, two with serious injuries, and one, who landed on his back, with life-threatening injuries. Hawkins Construction is the general contractor. Several Spanish-speaking workers wearing K2 vests milled around one ambulance. K2 is a large concrete subcontractor.

  1. I have a whole new view of Hawkins as a company now, Hawkins is not even helping out with the loss of income for the employees that were injured, they think workmans comp is enough!!!! Not to mention none of the top management have even gone to the hospitol to visit or check on thier own employees, I think its about the mighty dollar to them how sad =(
