Variety asks Martin Sheen how he supports marriage equality and remains Catholic

In Variety, Ted Johnson asked Martin Sheen, who recently played lawyer Ted Olson in "8" which revisited the court proceedings which overruled California's anti-gay marriage initiative. Johnson asked Sheen how he reconciles his religion with support for same-sex marriage rights.
They do not have the authority to condemn anybody. They can't say anybody is in hell. That is between [that person and] God. The church is not God.
Forty years ago, (long before The West Wing) Martin Sheen starred with Hal Holbrook, Hope Lange and Scott Jacobi in That Certain Summer, a then-daring Levinson-Link production for ABC television that was truly ground breaking for American commercial television.
