Juan Perez, Jr. and Robynn Tysver of the Omaha World-Herald report that Ben Gray, of the Omaha City Council may reintroduce a proposal to add gay people to the list of classes against whom discrimination will be prohibited in Omaha.
An anti-bias ordinance was introduced last fall, but narrowly defeated due to efforts by Christian political organizations and the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, which said that such laws embody "ambiguous" and "unclear" regulations that are "difficult" for businesses to implement.
130 cities and almost half of U.S. states already prohibit discrimination against their gay citizens, including Iowa and Council Bluffs.
A recent poll commissioned by HRC shows that 78% of Omahans favor protecting gay people in employment, public accommodations, and housing.
The chairman of the Nebraska Republican Party, Mark Fahleson, said antidiscrimination efforts on behalf of gay people have proved "burdensome" for businesses and cited what he considers to be a potential need to "make structural changes to businesses' restrooms or changing areas to accommodate transgender persons."
