It was written by Georges Bizet, whose "other" opera, Carmen, was a flop before achieving world-wide success and a place in the front row of the pantheon of immortal operas, by which time, unfortunately, Bizet had expired.
BTW, kids, the difference between a tenor and a baritone is the difference between, respectively, Pavarotti and (yowsah!) Robert Goulet.
That's always been one of my favorite duets, period. The hunky singers just add to the appeal.
