Josh O'Leary of the Iowa City Press-Citizen
reports that the nearly 50 members of Iowa City's First Baptist church have become the first in the state to join
a national association that advocates for the inclusion of LGBT people,
and the church likely is the first of its kind in Iowa to allow
same-sex couples to marry.
The congregation recently voted to join the Association of
Welcoming and Affirming Baptists — the first American Baptist Church in
the state to do so — as well as open the church to same-sex marriages. AWAB has about 50 member churches.
