Happy Birthday Willa Cather!

Nebraska's greatest novelist, Willa Sibert Cather (1873-1947) was born on Pearl Harbor Day before it was Pearl Harbor Day. H.L. Mencken, the cynic's cynic, said “No romantic novel ever written in America, by man or woman, is one half so beautiful as My Antonia.”

The Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial denies that she was a lesbian. From Wikipedia:
A resolutely private person, Cather had destroyed many old drafts, personal papers, and letters. Her will restricted the ability of scholars to quote from those personal papers that remain. Since the 1980s, feminist and other academic writers have explored Cather's sexual orientation and the influence of her female friendships on her work.
