In respect of the former, AKSARBENT could see a possible rationale for investigating abuse of 501 (c) (4) corporations (as which many Tea Party groups are organized) for political purposes but the IRS may have exceeded those bounds.
More troubling is the disclosure that the Justice Department seized records of incoming and outgoing calls for work and personal numbers for individual reporters and the general Associated Press offices in New York, Washington, and Hartford, CT as well as the main AP phone number in the U.S. House of Representatives gallery. Supposedly this is related to leaks in an investigation into how the AP learned about an al-Qaida bomb plot in Yemen before it was made public last year.
