Vatican election jockeying: England, Wales Catholic bishops suddenly disturbed by clerical homophobia

Joe Morgan of Gay Star News reports that African Cardinal Peter Turkson, from Ghana, promoted for the papacy in some quarters, has blamed the Catholic Church’s pedophilia on gay priests, saying the sex abuses would never happen in Africa because the culture is against homosexuality.
In response, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales issued a statement slamming the cardinal’s views.
"There is no empirical data which concludes that sexual orientation is connected to child sexual abuse," he said.
Recently Catholic Bishops in the UK distributed 1,000,000 anti-marriage equality postcards to parishioners attending weekend masses.
Turkson, who is also president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, is one of the top favorites to take over from Pope Benedict XVI.
More than 30 African countries criminalize homosexuality with punishments ranging from public whippings to jail time and capital punishment.
CNN notes that the 64-year-old Ghanaian cardinal has displayed anti-gay sentiments before, defending anti-gay legislation similar to Uganda's so-called "Kill the Gays" bill.
