Photo of Southwest pilot James Fritzen Taylor published, with apology; some employees incensed by his choice of word 'tolerant'

Captain James Fritzen Taylor
KRPC in Houston reports on the apology just released by the Southwest pilot whose homophobic, sexist and ageist rant tied up an air traffic control channel in Texas and was widely mocked by everyone from radio disc jockeys to Conan O'Brien. Some coworkers aren't unhappy with Taylor's use of the word 'tolerant' in his apology, which they evidently consider arrogant or condescending.

June 28, 2011

To All Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants and all Employees:

Because of the impact of my comments, I wanted to communicate with you directly.

Please accept my most sincere apology for the inappropriate and disrespectful remarks I made in March with an open microphone. I deeply regret the derogatory remarks I made and the hurt I have caused—I take full responsibility for those comments.

It was truly insensitive of me and I would like all of you to know that from now on, I will show nothing but the utmost respect during my interactions with all employees.

In addition, I would like to extend a special apology to all Flight Attendants, and especially those of Houston. I hope you will allow me to maintain a working relationship with all of you that will provide me the opportunity to extend an individual, personal apology to each one of you whenever we fly together.

Please know that this event has forever changed me and I hope that others can learn from my mistake.

I have learned a much-needed lesson to be more sensitive of others and I hope you will see me as a more tolerant and considerate person.

I am proud to be employed by Southwest Airlines and I am committed to representing our Company, and its employees in the most professional way possible.

With My Sincere Regards,

Captain James Taylor

    1. This guys my hero. He's 100% spot on. Listen, I'm a business man traveling frequently. I spend a lot of money in my tickets. Do I want to stare at some fat old man serving me drinks?

  2. Typical Mysogynist, narcissist, cheater, and bigot! Only feels guilty in the blinding light light of public opinion. I always wanted to be a "fly on the wall" in the cockpit, thanks for the opportunity! When were flight attendants hired to be comfort and entertainment women for your cheating ass ????? I must have missed that part in my interview for the Major air carrier I work for. You have greatly reduced the chances of ANY pilot getting lucky on a layover again !
Resign like A.Weiner did and do us all a favor!
My heart and prayers go out to your wife and kids, they don't deserve this !

    1. No, he isn't awesome. 50% is pushing it, and it's the vile, idiotic, and generally uneducated 50%. It is ridiculous and despicable to admire a loudmouth cheating judgmental bigot, and you should seek help.

  5. Do not buy your story. You ar4 only worried about keeping your job. Southwest should have fired you without question.Shame on the airline.

  6. This guy deserves to be fired and sued by the F/A's of Southwest and every other carrier insulted with this bigots diatribe. This is a guy you trust with your life? His apology was nothing more than an attempt to save his job and his HUGE retirement. His cockpit rant speaks volumes about the disgusting attitude of pilots (glorifued bus drivers) who feel they have earned GOD status by making it to the left seat. Sad really. F/A's are missing an tremendous oppurtunity to teach the travleing public and the public at large an excellent lesson in respect and tolerance. Letting this guy off the hook is just plain wrong and a missied oppurtunity. Stop drinking the Koolaid kids or things will never get better for you or your job.

  7. The guy was sharing his opinion in a private area, a mistake with the radio just occurred. We have the freedom of speech in this country so he shouldn't get fired. If acompany were to fire anybody for remarks that were derogatory, then I'm afraid there wouldn't be many people left (if any). Plus, wouldn't they then be taking away your freedom of speech if you are afraid to say anything as your comments could be misconstrued? If you've never made a derogatory comment in your life, then you could justify yourself by judging him (Although I try not to judge others because I'm sure there's more to the story than I know). If you have, then keep your mouth shut.

    1. You are stupid. The freedom of speech has practical limits. It does not entitle you to avoid responsibility when you're a terrible person who uses terrible judgment.

    2. I disagree that this idiot has the right to free speech in the cockpit. When he puts his uniform on, he becomes the mouthpiece and representative of Southwest Airlines. He's got serious issues that start with a God complex where he places the rest of the world somewhere beneath himself. I feel sorry for his poor wife. Imagine how she feels. I'd be ashamed to be even loosely associated with this tyrant. Southwest should have fired him. He's not emotionally stable enough to have the lives of others in his hands every day.

  8. This guy was having a private conversation when a mistake occurred with the radio. Since we have the freedom of speech in this country, he shouldn't be fired for this (only if his actions were discriminatory). If a company were to fire a person for what they heard in the office, wouldn't they be infringing upon this right? I'm afraid if a company were to fire every person that had some form of bigotry, not many (if any) would be left. If you have never made a derogatory comment, then you could have more of a right to judge him (although I believe you shouldn't judge others in a situation like this because there is probably more to the story than we are aware of). If you have, then don't be so ready to sacrifice this guy. Realize that bigotry is an issue that we all need to work on.

  9. Not only would I not want to fly with James Taylor as the pilot, but I definitely would request to NEVER be part of his crew. All work environments need a team atmosphere, especially the flight crew. When you put your life's safety in the hands of someone who freely makes statements "HATE 100%"....that should make Southwest Airlines question is this guy fit for the job and responsible for the safty for all on board?

  10. Please just fire the ignoramus...

  11. I'm fascinated by the two postings above, the one starting "The guy was sharing his opinion" and the one beginning "This guy was having a private conversation." One is very poorly written and misspelled, while the other is well written...yet BOTH follow exactly the same formula and make exactly the same points. So, who's providing the template for those remarks? Hmmm???

  12. It is sad to read that some poster believes the comments represent 90% of men. They do not.

  13. Ummm sorry guys, but this wasn't a "private conversation" - it was a conversation in a work setting with at least one person (the First Officer) knowingly within hearing distance and many others unknowingly so. Regardless of whether the F/O agrees with Fritzy's opinions, the Captain created a hostile work environment plain and simple. The fact that the rest of the cabin crew may or may not have heard his rant is irrelevant. As a former manager said to me at the major airline where I used to work "regardless of the outcome, the action remains the same". And for that action, he should be properly punished - not just given an unpaid vacation and made to apologize. For every documented situation like this there are countless examples that go unrecognized. Southwest missed an opportunity to properly admonish his behavior and at the same time set a better example for acceptable flight crew behavior.

  14. In regards to what the comment above is referring to. I was having a horrible time writing the first comment due to internet problems (I am on Mobile Partner as I am traveling) and it seemed like it didn't go through. I then re-wrote the comment. Now they seem to both have appeared. I hope that this answers your question.

  15. Imagine the outrage if his bigoted comments towards gays were directed to blacks or jews? Unfortunately, it's still acceptable in this country to bash gays. Sad.

  16. It's sad that in this day and age there are still people like him. I fly Southwest almost exclusively and I am deeply hurt by this asshole's comments. He is only sorry because he was caught. I hope that he does find some hot flight attendant to fuck and then get some STD that will make his dick turn green and fall off!

  17. And I guess it's easy to talk about others' looks when you're "hiding" behind a microphone...now it's clear why he felt the need to cut other people down---balding--big nose...clearly insecure himself.

  18. If the airline wont fire him and take his money, I hope his wife leaves him and takes it all. : )

Karma is a bitch and I am sure he is living in hell. Well deserved. Hope it continues for a long time!

  20. Southwest is truly becoming a disappointing airline!
They, as a company , are ultimately responsible for this outcome. And as a "captain/pilot", HE has more responsibility--thus becomes more liable for his actions & speech!
The discipline should therefore , be greater.
More loss of respect for Southwest!

  22. Ok I normally have sympathy for pilots making mistakes but this is a case I think this pilot probably got the reception he deserved. Saying that I don't think he would of got off lightly imagine the embarrassment finding out just about everyone over the world has heard his rant as well as having to work with the people he slagged off. Well rather than sacking him I hope everyone at airline kept reminding him of this rant and got most out of him through it. That letter of apology was in truth him grovelling cos he had been caught out all he was sorry about is being caught.
